Laughing Bear Press was founded in 1976 to publish a literary magazine and poetry chapbooks. The magazine, Laughing Bear was published until 1978, producing six issues. Books were published into the early 1990's – 18 titles in all. Laughing Bear Newsletter was originally published as a supplement to the magazine, but soon became more popular than the magazine. In 1989, the newsletter began being published as a separate subscription publication.
