I'm not sure if non-profit or for profit is more advantageous to me, and how to establish relationships with distributors, and I haven't found any books that deal specifically with these and other small publisher issues (not self-publishing or generic small business advice). Can you offer any suggestions to help me get started? Thanks! |

The question of non-profit and profit depends on your aptitude. If you can deal with the paperwork of maintaining non-profit status and writing grant proposals, that is a good way to go for a literary publisher. If not, it can be hell. Check out the CLMP web site at www.clmp.org for non-profit information. Distributors are tough. They are not inclined to work with small publishers, especially literary ones. If you live in a metropolitan area, try approaching bookstores yourself. If you have an active arts community, get involved. You'll learn more from other artists, craftspeople, and publishers about selling in your local market than you could from any book. Work with local colleges, bookstores and coffeehouses to sponsor readings and book fairs. Finally, use the internet. Build a web site to make your books available to as many readers as possible. |
