I am new to this site and new to magazine publishing. Please share with me your experience with small press printers (500 copies or less). What are fair rates and how does one find the best deals?

The good news is that it is easier than every to find short run printers. When I started in the 1970's it was hard to find a resonably priced printer who would do a print run of less than 1,000. For rates, try PrintVendors.com. They give you quotes from a variety of printers, so you can compare. They also have a "Magazine Printing Guide" that may answer a lot of your wquestions.
