I am interested in starting a magazine targeted at african-american youth ages 12-18. I envision it being an educational/resource magazine and see it being marketed to schools primarily, until it takes off of course. I am a teacher in atlanta and plan to target that market initially. My dilema is I don't know where to go from here. Can you provide me with any resources and your opinion on how well this type of publication would fair in the market. Thanks

Being a teacher yourself certainly helps. I would contact the distributors that currently supply magazines to your district and see if any of them would be interested in distributing your magazine. For their names, try your school librarian and whoever handles educational materials purchasing for your district. Stirring up interest among other teachers would help, too. Once you have a better idea what the distributors, purchasers and teachers (and students!) would like to see in such a magazine, you will be in a good position to plan it out to fit a ready-made market. You may even find some sponsors along the way.
