I am seriously interested in starting a printed newsletter that would mail monthly. I'm trying to make this a for-profit business that would eventually allow me to stop working full time. Is this still possible with a newsletter, or is there too much competition with e-zines and other e-stuff?

The e-stuff really seldom works. A lot of people have tried it, but there are too many free e-newsletters and other free information sources online for for-profit e-publications to have much of a chance. So, the answer is that e-zines are not really a factor as competition. If you have an idea for a newsletter that has unique value for readers and is focused on a specific subject, you can make it. That said, you should also have a web site to support the newsletter.
