i am a graphic designer in the process of starting a magazine, (and no, i am not the greatest writer). im still thinking of a nitch thats not out there right now to start my magazine. what i would like to do is gather names of people interested in trading there skills for skills. being an illustrator i can trade my art skills for writing skills, or %50 trade %50 cash. sounds like a good idea, hope it can happen.Tom how do you feel about my idea?
What you are suggesting is in the grand tradition of small press. From the 1950's though the 1970's (up until desktop publishing allowed publishers to become isolated) publishers would trade on their strengths in order to get their work out. One publisher may have also been a printer, another had graphics skills, another might be a papermaker, another a writer and reviewer. They created co-ops formally or informally to share their skills, usually on a local or regional level (New York, Northern California, the Pacific Northwest, and so on). Contact your local arts comission to see who is doing what and then hook up through arts events or book fairs.
