What is the guideline for using fonts in text matter in magazines? I read that text should be serif fonts and headings in sans serif. Is there a guideline for this? What fonts are used for text in magazines like FHM and Maxim?

You'll find that most magazines and books with large blocks of text use serif fonts like Times New Roman, Garamond, Century Schoolbook, and Palatino. It is easier for the eye to follow serif fonts where the letters appear almost connected, than sans serif fonts where the letters feel more separated. Sans serif fonts are better for small blocks of text or headlines. I don't know which fonts are used for those magazines, but if they aren't varieties of Times or Schoolbook, they are probably close.
