What is an ISBN number, and is it necessary for publishing a magazine in Maryland? If it is how do you get it?

The ISBN is for books. For a magazine you need an ISSN, International Standard Serial Number. The ISSN is not required to publish a magazine in Maryland, or any other state, but it is a powerful tool for your magazine and it is FREE. The ISSN is a unique number assigned to your magazine to identify it anywhere in the world. All computerized systems that track magazines do so using the ISSN. That goes for bookstores, distributors, libraries, online sellers, and subscription services. Also, the ISSN can be used to prove that your magazine's name is owned by you. And you need an ISSN if you are going to copyright your magazine. You will find application forms and information about ISSN at the Library of Congress ISSN web site: www.loc.gov/issn
