My friend and I are in the process of sowing an idea for a fashion magazine in India especially highlighting Bollywood fashion (something like US or People here). I would like some advertising and marketing tips esp since we are not professionals at this.

I don't know much about the Indian market for magazines, but I would suggest you look into publishing organizations in India for help. If nothing else you some of the best and most reasonably priced printing companies in the world there. I would assume there is a pretty sophisticated publishing community you can draw on for advice.

I found some web sites that may be helpful to you. www.biztradeshows.com lists publishing events coming up this year in India. Click their "Printing & Publishing" link and check out the Dehli Book & Stationary Fair. Also see IndiaMart at www.indiamart.com for a directory of all kinds of suppliers, manufacturers and services available in India.

Thanks Tom, Besides the websites for more information, I would like to know whats the best way to attract advertisers to place ads in your magazine when its a fresh new concept especially started by newcomers (I think u could apply this globally not just in terms of the Indian market).

The best way to attract advertisers to a magazine started by newcomers is to have a solid business plan that shows you are serious and will be around awhile, a dynamic sample issue, and approach the advertisers with an enthusiastic and convincing marketing campaign. You have to get the word out about your magazine using press releases and publicity, and then follow up by going to the advertisers directly. It would not be a bad idea at all to hire a publishing consultant or PR firm to help get you on the right track. There are several listed in the Publisher Resources page of this web site.
